Not mowed and no bunkers
My husband and I went to play this course today as it is highly rated in the state of Illinois. We were extremely disappointed to find that nothing had been mowed except the greens. The tee boxes were long and tee markers not lined up to direct golfers down the fairway. The fairways were not mowed as well and one fairway was completely re-seeded (12). The rough was not even and extremely long just off the fairway. The bunkers looked like they had not had any maintence in several years. All full of dirt and mud, weeds and large clumps of grass growing in them. We had no indication before playing today that the course was in such disrepair.
We could definitely see the courses potential for being highly rated. Hopefully soon they get an owner that will pay for the upkeep.
The Comeback Kid
I've enjoyed Piper Glen golf course for over 15 years and always considered it a very beautiful course and layout.Last year, or the year before, the course was neglected to the point of only watered tees and greens-everything else was dry and yellow. It seemed only a matter of time before the course was doomed to fail-like many courses have lately.But,lo-and-behold,Piper Glen was as green as Springtime in one of the hottest stretches of summer, without rain,we've had in a long time. The course was in great shape-the fairways green, the greens nicely manicured and the pace of play perfect.Kudos to management in reinvigorating this gem back to it's natural beauty.
The Glen is back!
Piper Glen has made huge improvement over the last 2 years under new management and new ownership. This time in 2015 the course was in a shambles thanks to previous ownership, 2 years later "The Glen" is back.
disappointed again
This course was in very poor condition. The sand traps were listed as "ground under repair". The staff was not friendly and I did not find the course very interesting. I was disappointed because the course was listed in the 7th edition of Zagat's America's Top Golf Courses.
unpleasant day of golf
This round of golf was very disappointing. The course other than the greens was in terrible shape. The sand traps were considered ground under repair. I have always considered this course to be overrated and after playing it yesterday, my feelings were justified.
A challening course in many ways
This course was very challenging but badly in need of maintenance. Most of the sand traps were terrible. No sand or standing water. Many of the fairways had a high percentage of dead grass.
Sand traps
Traps are poor but new owner this week has cap improvement on the traps as number one priority so the press says.
Great track
This is a great track in Springfield Illinois probably the best layout with the exception of the bunkers which I read in the paper today they're redoing this course is an absolute Gem and we look forward to playing it again. It can be frustrating if your not accurate with your shots but who wants a boring golf course.
Solid course in great condition. Lost a lot of balls in bounds which was weird but had a great day
Excellent for the price!
Course was a lot of fun, staff was very very nice and helpful, the clubhouse was beautiful and good and drinks were great!
Average
Course is in ok shape. Greens and fairways needed watered. Many of the sand traps lack sand and not maintained. Tables, chairs and coolers left on course from outing the day before.
Very Good Deal
I appreciate the discounts we receive with Golfnow
A fun challenge
After reading Golf Now course reviews, we decided to give Piper Glen another try. (We'd played the course in the fall of 2015, found it in terrible shape, and didn't go back. I'm happy to say PG has been given the TLC it needed. Bunkers could still use some work, but the fairways and greens are GOOD. The rough is thick and tough, the fairways are NARROW, and the greens are small and undulated. Be ready for a challenge, but the shape of the course can't be blamed for high scores now! ENJOY!!
This course is back
Last time I played this course, it was in terrible shape, today it is in excellent condition.
Winter Fun
Nice day and nice course to get in 18 holes of golf in the middle of winter!!
Overall Great Shape
Fairways & greens are in excellent shape! Sandtraps are like most in Central IL, hard packed needing lots of new sand.
Overall the course is in great shape and worth playing especially at winter rates......
Emzo75,
Thank you for your feedback and we are dissapointed that you did not enjoy your time at Piper Glen. It had been raining for 3 straight days and that is the reason why the rough was very long and some of the tees were long. Please feel free to email me directly so we can discuss this further. Thank you
