Walters Golf Has a Lot of Work To Do
Golfnow offered a tee time for the ridiculously low price of 9.00 so please keep that in mind. For that price, anything above a cow pasture is a good deal.
The course has a fun layout and from the Blues it has a slope of 130 so it is challenging. Lots of woods and over half of the par 4's and 5's have a dogleg or bend. The green are a nice size, challenging but not too difficult.
The course does have issues though:
The yardage markers are missing on most of the holes so it is difficult to gauge distance.
Major drainage problems so numerous places with standing water.
The greens were recently airated so they were not in the best of shape but that is too be expected for this time of year.
Cart paths just disappear throughout the course so I felt bad driving on the grass with it being so wet but I had no choice.
The locker room has not been updated since was built in 1956. There is even Vitalis on the counter for you if you want to leave smelling fresh!
I enjoyed playing there but I was about the only one. Sure it was an overcast day but I played the entire course under three hours and didn't see anyone playing the entire time. If you like this coures I would suggest going out and playing it because I do not expect them to be in business much longer.
I wasn't very impressed.
As of now the greens are being aerated, and the fairways are what I could only call a hybrid of dead and burnt grass. I'm sure it will be in better shape in a month or two but as of now there are other courses in the area that are in much better shape. We also played behind a five-some, and with zero rangers patrolling the course we got to watch them all day long. I understand that it is a difficult transition into becoming a public course. We will more than likely try again in a month or so to see if the conditions have improved.
liked old school country club layout
Course was in very poor condition. I hope WGM invests $$ in this course. would come back often.
Love this course!
Despite a tornado Wednesday the course had sustained a lot of tree damage, but unless you had a very errant shot they did not affect your play. Course pro thanked us for coming out to play and gave us cards for our next round to be discounted! Great salesmanship!
many blind shots
The course was not in the best of shape, maybe because it is early in season?? Tee boxes need lots of attention as do bunkers with all the grass growing in them. The greens must have been aerated with lots of sand on them, the ball picked up a quarter inch of sand just rolling across them. Fairways also need attention. There are many blind shots on this course. I think once they take care of the course it would nice to try it again, but in the meantime don't plan to do so.
LOVE the layout.
Course is always in good shape and very friendly staff.
As Always; A pleasure to play.
This is only my second time playing Lockhaven CC. And only have one wish. I wish they could move it closer to me. This course is a pleasure to play at anytime. My son and I walked it yesterday and it was in great condition considering the weather and time of year. If you get a chance, play a round. I promise you will not be disappointed. This course is one of the most challenging in the St. Louis Area, but fair enough for all to enjoy. The staff at Lockhaven CC goes way over to make sure your round is enjoyable.
Love the course!!!!
Friendly staff. It is great layout for beginners and advance players. The price was great. Played 18 holes in just under 4 hours. Greens were nice and fast. I will play it again!!!
Course has a great and varied layout
I have played 475 different courses to date. I understand the monies are tight for fertilization, killing weeds, preparing, picking up sticks and weeding traps, but it needs to be done. It doesn't bother me much, however, it will preclude others that may like the course but do not like the conditions. I am not complaining, I would like to see your course succeed. I was very disappointed this time, since I missed a hole in one on four. That is okay, Iam averaging 2 on #4 the last two rounds.
Great variety of up and down
What a beautiful location for a golf course on the bluffs just below touristy, scenic, Grafton, Il.. I played it from the tips, and although it's not extremely long, the course takes on a whole different level of difficulty with the varying elevations. What was surprisingly nice, there were very few blind shots for the longer hitter, and I could see where to land the shot. Also what impressed me was the easy access from cart to green for those of us with battle wounds... you don't have to be a mountain climber to play this course! The greens rolled great, it was well maintained, and nice job removing the leaves. This is a great place to make a special day of it for a date or with the family, and spend the evening on the quiet river front... it doesn't get much better than that!
Worth the Drive
If you live in N. County, Lockhaven should be in your regular rotation. If you live in the City, W. County or S. County, Lockhaven should be on your occasional play list...it's worth the drive. Make a day of it; go to Fast Eddy's, admire the River, see the Piasa.
The course features a very good layout with topographical change throughout. It's not a long or hard course. But each hole offers a different challenge. The greens are Lockhaven's best asset, but they need a little assist from the grounds crew to prevent further bermuda invasion on the fringes.
Fans of Walter's Management will be happy. Others will reserve judgement. But, this course is a great addition to the semi-public course menu in St. Louis. Go play it.
Best greens I played on in the St. Louis Metro area this year.
This is an old style course. Lots of trees and rolling fairways. You need to keep the ball in play to score. The fairways were in very good condition for Bermuda grass this time of year. Greens rolled very smooth and very fast! Best I've played in the St. Louis Metro area this year.
course difficulty was challenging
Challenging course. Shots must be straight otherwise you may find your ball among the trees.
Great layout for average golfer.
The course is very user friendly; a little long for seniors but well within senior range. The greens were extremely fast but perdictable. Usually little trouble is outside fairway. Overall, a course I want to play again.
Review
Great course is you want to test you accuracy. Have to hit driver straight to score here
country club course with country club feel
Love this course! Big fairways, huge trees, huge lightning fast greens. Great sight lines from the tees. Staff could be a bit more friendly, but well worth the nice drive up the river road. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Plenty of hills and trees. Fast, true greens.
This is a former country club that now allows public play, so it still seems much like a private club. I played from the back tees and found that the course was not particularly long. I played in early October, so the course was not very crowded. Several of the tees were not well maintained, but I could find a decent tee area. The fairways are either Bermuda or Zoyzia, which I am not used to, but for the most part were ok. The many trees were dropping their leaves and acorns,so finding your ball was sometimes a challenge. I really liked the speed of the greens and how well they held the ball. They were also very true.
Best Place to Play in Metro East
Lockhaven is a classic country club layout. Tight tree lined fairways with a lot of slope lies. Knowing where to hit the ball both on the greens and in the fairway is a premium for this course, so plan to play it at least a second time. Excellent greens and the staff is wonderful.
Great course. People wonderful to work with.
Can't wait to play this course again. The only problem is that it's about 45 minutes away from where I live.
New Staff for 2013. THanks for your post and your honesty. Can't wait for your return this Season.
