3.5 Stars
I usually play Carillon once a year during the week. Well over 20 rounds under my belt here.....You can get caught up in some very slow play as this is a 55+ community - some of the locals do take their sweet time. Yesterday the pace was okay until the last 4 or 5 holes where it crawled to a turtles pace. Not surprising because if you play the "standard" traditional routing red to white...the last 4 holes are pretty tough finishing with the infamous Gauntlet - a par 5 with water everywhere. Tees, rough, fairways are in really good shape, traps are okay but not consistent. While the greens roll okay there are blemishes everywhere on all of them due to the extreme amount of play. Scads of poorly repaired and/or not repaired at all ball marks. Brown ball mark blemishes everywhere. Very disconcerting...you'll be dodging these damages on any putt over 4 feet......but the greens are decently playable with good speed.
The course can get claustrophobic in places.....a lot of your drives have to be carefully placed as several of the par 4's have very small width of fairways as you play around, beside and through the 55+ community....some of the housing is very intrusive/can easily be hit with an errant shot.. All of the folks that work there are welcoming and want you to have a good experience. Clubhouse with restaurant/bar and a very tired locker room with showers that has needed a refresh for at least a decade or more. Grass driving range and decent practice/chipping green as well as putting green to warm up on. FYI - the Blue Course nine is probably the best of the 3 nines except for a really stupid poorly designed Par 5 5th hole where there's simply no landing area for your second shot. If you have the time and energy play the blue 9 as your last nine....sometimes it's completely empty.... recommend for play but once a season is enough for me.
Good local course
Course was in good shape over all, but greens were a little beat up with many ball markers not fixed. Pace of play was ok.
Ziggy
Great course. Very wet after morning rain. Greens filled with water. Grass wet like playing on a wet carpet. Will be back
Challenging
This course was challenging to play 18 holes for sure. But an average golfer likes a challenge once in a while. More challenging was figuring out where to go to get to the next hole. Some signs would be helpful.
Great for price
Nicely conditioned course and good value. Houses a little tight but not bad.
Great course. Always in good shape and nice variety of holes. Great hot dog at turn. Nice clubhouse and bar to have drink afterward.
Nice 27
Played all 27 holes. Pace of play was excellent for a Friday morning tee time. The green on the red course were a bit pick marked but the green on the white were in great shape. The blue course has 3 par 3's. Can't recall which hole it was on the blue course but there was a kid that was running out from the houses and snagging balls that landed in the fairway. Group ahead of us watched the kid do it to our group and told us later. Kid was trying to sell balls to players too. Lol. Overall, very nice course. Friendly staff. Decent concession prices and good value compared to other courses in the area. Definitely would play again.
Great Course except for the cart paths
This was my first time playing at Carillon and i really did enjoy it despite the bad weather. The absolute worst thing about this course are the cart paths. Very bumpy and all of the holes were entirely filled with water.
