Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
About
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont is conveniently situated just a half hour outside downtown Chicago. Pete Dye and his son P.B. collaborated to design the course, making it the only Dye design in the Chicago area. A well thought-out strategy will be greatly rewarded on this challenging layout and bad shots made without any thought will be severely punished. This is definitely not a golf course where you can just grip it and rip it. The fairways are fairly straight and forgiving, but most of the approach shots play to tricky elevated greens. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing the greens and water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club's par 3s have a reputation for being particularly challenging. But depending on how windy it is, the final hole might present the most formidable challenge.

What happened to this place?
Ruffled Feathers is a Pete Dye course and it used to be in nice shape. I noticed about four years ago it had gone waaaaay downhill -- just horrible condition. Not much better now. I assumed back then the ownership change had gone awry, but that's no longer an excuse. Bunkers were atrocious. Greens were just OK. Fairways looked like they had been strip-mined in a 20th-century land war. And off the fairways...it looked like the course had been abandoned.
Even the outing we hosted was a mess. The pro shop was taking tee times after 10:30 for a 1:00 shotgun outing that had the whole course, so even at 1:45 there were non-outing groups still on the 12th (the 12th!) hole. On our first tee there were *four* groups on the same hole. We were on pace for a six-hour round when I gave up on the back nine.
What happened to this place? It's sad to see.
Beat up and slow today
Greens are in the worst shape I’ve ever seen them in four years, and the pace was brutally slow.
I left after nine holes
3rd round at Ruffled this season
RF is in very good shape right now. Greens were receptive as we played after a downpour of about 1/2 inch mid-day. Pace of play was very good - slightly over 3 hours as the tee sheet was pretty empty between noon and 1pm. $55 senior rate is a tad pricey but the layout and challenges (130 slope from the white tees!) this course presents make it worth the $55....but $45 would be about right mark. In addition RF do charge way too much for beverages - playing partner at the turn wanted a John Daly and that cost $10! All of the employees that work here were fantastic to interact with. I've now had 3 really nice experiences here this season and might even return in another month or so....recommend -if you're a first timer try to play with someone that has played the course. A ton of target golf involved on this Dye design.
Great Course, Unfortunate Pace
Wonderful course, had a lot of fun - unfortunately it looked as though there was league play ahead of us - and appeared the course was overbooked. Waiting to tee off every hole from 6 onward, with group(s) lining up behind us as well. Was just a very crowded day - Sunday afternoon golf for ya. Would definitely go back another time.
Not a value today
It was hot and we didn't see a beverage cart until the back nine. No food available at the turn ( closed). I normally play this course three to four times a year. Today was a disappointing visit.
Dybo's Take
Poor sand and around the green conditions were bare to fluff with beat up conditions around the greens. The more I play it the worse it gets, but the staff is great.
Could use some water
The course is very firm, much more than other courses in the area. Many greens the ball will bounce high in the air from a PW approach.
Great Course
Pricey, but worth it. Very challenging but a lot of fun.
Staff struggled A LOT!
5.5 hr round on Saturday July 3rd with a tee time of 2:15 PM. Did not mention course had an amateur "Senior Golf Tour" event ahead of us until we got to the tee box. Told just prepare for a long day. Carts were not available one hour prior to our tee time so we could hit the range and putt. Course soaking wet despite no rain for a couple of days. Greens were solid. Course outlay very fair but challenging. A good test of golf for all abilities. Staff was overmatched and unable to provide services to the regular paying customer. At least that day. Disappointing!!!!
Great course but rain
Rain soaked fairways made play not fulfilling! On top of it the waiting time is very bad because of so many players in the July 4 holiday week.
Bad condition
Ruff is high .. don’t hit your ball 2 feet off the fairway, never going to find it. Water in most of the traps. I’ve played here many times , worst shape in a long time.
Very Expensive
Not only the green fees, but course drinks and food were quite heady in price. It's time to reel it back.
