Disappointing
I've grown up playing this course and many others around the Springfield area for years now. I recently heard that a new owner took over that has a turf management degree. Well, all I have to say is turf management degree my butt. The course looked pretty flawless under the old owner (very well cared for greens, fairways, etc.). I'm pretty shocked at how many dead spots and weeds were on the greens especially with all the rain we've had this year!. There wasn't a single green that was green or with no dead spots. Multiple times I had to put over these insanely large dead spots or move my ball a club length just to have a fair opportunity to make a putt. I definitely will not being going back to this course this season
Fun course
Considering the time of year in the Midwest, Shambolee is in good shape and will undoubtedly improve very soon. It's a fun layout with a nice little clubhouse and VERY nice staff and owner. Makes for a fun and very affordable day of golf, and we routinely play Shambolee several times over the season.
Thumbs Up to Shambolee and January Golf in Central Illinois
Shambolee was open for business in mid January, and I'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint. Our group looks forward to a return trip in the spring, after the winter storm debris has been cleared and the greens and bunkers have been serviced.
Very Windy
Nice layout but sometimes a bit difficult finding the next hole, only on 2 of them...It was extremely windy but we did ok with the course. Only one real water hazard. A few bunkers but nothing that can't be avoided if you play well. The greens were in very good condition, as was the course. The greens are also elevated and rolling. We enjoyed them. A few areas where you can lose the ball and not find it. We would play this course again. The folks in the clubhouse were very friendly and helpful and the food was very good.
Really rough
This course is in really bad shape partly due to aeration and fertilizer application but also had very little existing turf on the fairways.
Literally a Cow Pasture
Terrible. I can understand plugging the greens and giving them the opportunity to heal - but at least "sweep" the plugs off the greens. The fairways were barren and in fact I started to purposefully hit to the rough to get a better lie. Don't waste your money.
Very friendly staff
The staff at the course were very friendly and helpful.
great course
Sand Traps were torn up/under construction which is why i gave it a 4 for course conditions. It is a beautiful course! I would like to play it again. I was the first to tee off so I was done around 2.5 hrs. A few mature trees, some tall grass, and a lot of near by roads with the course contouring beautifully with them. Very friendly clubhouse.
Watch out for the geese
Good Value. Friendly Staff. Course Conditions Ok.
Good value for the price. Friendly staff as well as other golfers. Some patches on greens and bunkers do not have sand. Otherwise course conditions ok. Fairly long course but mostly wide open. Enjoyed my round.
Quite a Gem
Shambolee Golf Course in Petersburg, IL, is a wonderful course in the heart of where Abe Lincoln lived. The course is minutes away from Lincoln's New Salem State Park. It is a beautiful and challenging 18 hole layout. The pace of play was great as I played 18 in just over three hours. Good was very inexpensive. The staff was friendly too. I will be playing this course again.
Great Value
The course is wide open which is good for beginners. Course was in very good shape and you can't beat the price. We had some slow players in front that wouldn't let us play through but not really a course issue. There was no one at the bar for almost 10 minures at the 19th hole so we left.
Great Value
This course is in good shape and well worth the deals. Very happy, will return.
Super conditions and great value
This course is one of the most underrated in the area. It's always clean and well maintained. Can be a challenge but is somewhat forgiving for the average golfer. I will keep coming back and highly recommend.
Considering the heat, the course was in great condition.
The staff was very helpful from the start. The gentlemen in hte clubhouse when I paid made sure to even remind of being cautious with my daughter out on the course for her safety, course was in great shape considering the heat as of late, and the staff was great when we came in.
Course was in great shape.
Pace of play was great. Course was well maintained and in good shape. Holes were challenging but very fair. Will play again for sure.
Great value for the price and quality of course
Fun course to play, soft receptive greens (especially for late August), challenging layout at times but plenty of birdie holes. Needs some changes to be great. First, needs yardage markers desperately, you waste too much time trying to find anything marked with a yardage. Also, the greens are soft and receptive but impossible to read due to the length of grass and lack of true breaks. The staff workers are awesome, always friendly. All in all I like this course a lot just might have to download a gps app to be able to select the right club next time.
Good deal for price
Good deal for the price. Couple of neglected bunkers
? Had signs marked ground under repair. Pace of play would
increase with visible yardage markers
