Good value
Great old course on the east side of Joliet. Formerly Joliet country club now public, this course is great for the average golfer. Lack of cart paths can be a little confusing when trying to find the next hole, also back to back par 3s on the front 9 is a little odd. Overall very enjoyable. Very strategic course.
Jumbled 1905 Bendelow routing
1st year open to John Q. Public and managed by Kemper Sports. Introductory is $39 wkday/$49 wkend - less to walk
All types of practice areas - range/putt green/chip area & even a full practice hole. Functional dated clubhouse with restaurant/bar overlooking course/locker rooms and showers.
Overall - excellent course conditioning....many nicely sloped back to front greens/traps when they are raked up for the season will be top notch.
Front nine - Bendelow routing & design with smallish greensites. Kemper elected to re-route the front nine - result is two "same length" par 3's back to back (fyi you end up playing all 4 par 3's in just a nine hole stretch). Clubhouse/halfway house after 8th hole. The greensites on 1, 2, 5, 6 & 8 are really a joy and provide proper challenge. 6 is a really deceptive slightly uphill par 3 blind back left trap with an angled green with ridge.
Back nine - 10/11 really nice parkland Bendelow's. Modern design sets in green sites get larger and course was poorly re-routed on the 12 thru 14 stretch which contains the other two par 3's. The 4 finishing holes are a strong test as a small creek meanders though the back nine. Down and then up classic Bendelow routing design. Of special note is the 17th. Beautiful tree lined tee shot from a ridge and the 3 shotter doglegs left to a very small angled site deceptively sanded on a ridge.
Overall I really enjoyed my first time at Joliet GC. Definitely recommend play or two for upcoming season - nice value play with some really good bones however that's provided they keep the introductory greens fees at $39/$49. More than that I'd have to question.
I have no doubt conditions will be well above average from what I saw - when the greens starting growing they are going to extremely fun with some the contour involved.
4 to 4.5 stars. Absolutely recommend play. Downgrade is because of unfortunate re-routes and subsequent redesigns.
Dangerous design
Course is very dangerous, Because every hall is zigzag fairway.
Everyone shout “Fore “ very nervous play.
Drop the ball front side back side .
It’s very sirious problem.
Challenging
Couldn’t make one 3 1/2 foot putt, fairly hilly and thick rough around the greens and I would love to go back
Fun Course, Great Pace of Play, Best Private Value in Suburbs
This course has a fun and challenging layout. With a few exceptions this is the same layout from 1905. The conditions are above average and greens and fairways are great. The more I play here, the more I enjoy the layout. It has some short par 5's that are super fun and can be played different ways. There are some longer par 4's that challenge you in a different way and put a premium on a good short game. 16-18 are an extremely fun way to end the round, I look forward to them every time, depending on the day you can either gain strokes or go the other way. Greens are established and reaceive the ball well, so you can stick it close with a good shot. Conditions are better than public and more mid range for private. There is a very nice grill to stop during and after the round, the food is great. If you are looking for a not so pretentious experience and great golf Joliet CC is a great choice.
