Wonderful Quirky Old Schooler
Putting surfaces were in awesome condition and quick. First timer and will definitely return. My "find" so far of this 2016 golf season. Upon our arrival just turning into the parking lot were were greeted by a happy dog who then in turn directed us to our parking space. A really nice first impression!
Just 20 minutes south of Cinder Ridge GC on I-55 you'll discover a 103 year old course that retains it's old school charm with plenty of hills/dales/trees/a river that runs through it and excellent design bones. Both of the par 5's on the front nine provide plenty of challenge....the wide open 554 yd 8th requires 3 very well struck shots to reach the dance floor. Only one sand trap left of the 9th green and course really doesn't need more. Both the 1st and 10th holes short par 4's require placed tee shots as left in the fairway as possible....and both holes feature extremely crowned greens...the 10th in particular is a challenging up hill approach. An unusual back nine scorecard par 35 (all par 4's, one par 3) the lone back nine short hole 11th at just over 100 yards is uphill to a bowl-like postage stamp green guarded by old oak trees up the right side and has an added bonus that you get to preview this entire hole driving from the 10th green. The short downhill 290 yd 17th's defense is a small thin 25 to 30 ft wide sliver of a green with drop offs on both sides....quirky yet most wonderful. The long dog leg left finishing hole around and over the river is also guarded by an elevated lake on the left side to a two tiered green cut in the hillside is beautiful/awesome scorecard wrecker (I remarked to my playing partner it reminded me of Riverside CC)......a most challenging finish to a very nice surprise find. My only criticism of the layout is that there are only two very short wedge/9 iron par 3's...9th and 11th and the 200 yd up hill 5th hole. 4 stars trending to 4.5 stars....not "pristine" but very well maintained and well run operation.
Highly recommend....it's worth the drive from Chicago or the burbs to get in a play or two. A 3 hour mid-morning weekday round.
Upon our return may we honored to have the same "host"/welcome dog greet us again in the parking lot....bring a biscuit...he likes them and may ride in the cart with you to the first tee if requested.
Nice course in the middle of nowhere
My wife and I really enjoyed the course...a little wet from rain but was still playable. Tough greens made it challenging.
course condition
course was in good condition overall. some spots were being seeded from heavy rains in the spring.
Open and fun
Recent rains may have softened it some but I found the course fairways relatively easy to hit and open as long as you choose the right club off the tee. I played as a single and starter sent me off on the back which was great and played in 2 hours. Greens receptive, looked a little fuzzy and slow but they were anything but. They did have grain however so you had to read that into the putt. Very enjoyable round.
For as much as we've had, course in great shape
Played here the other day. Made a reservation on golf now for less than half the daily rate. With all the rain we have had this course was in much better shape than most that I have played in the last month. Other than it being hot, the course was in good shape. Greens were still super fast.
Still an excellent course
As I read the reviews, I often wonder... Did you play Dwight? Narrow fairways? Easy birdie opportunities? Unchallenging greens? Not now, nor have I ever felt that way when playing Dwight. Haven't played here in 15 years, but it is as challenging and as well kept as it ever was. Plenty of trouble to get into for an intermediate golfer, and I'm OK with the lack of sand. Greens are extremely fast and challenging for me since none of them are flat. Most are slightly domed and very easy to turn a 10 foot putt into another 10 foot putt on the other side of the pin. Excellent course, extremely well kept, and well worth the greens fees.
good value
Not a great course but for $30 it was definitely worth it.
Fantastic greens
Dwight country Club is the type of course where you can score or post a big number. The course itself looks harmless until you get on the greens which are in excellent shape fast, small and challenging. The staff and members are extremely friendly. The food is excellent, Rib eyes are FANTASTIC!!!. The atmosphere is worth the price of golf and club house is very relaxing you would never think you were at a golf course. The greens keeper should get a raise.
Somewhat challenging
Creek running through requires placement shots and narrow fairways require straight drives.
Great value
Course is well maintained, with some challenges, but not so difficult that a weekend duffer can't get a few pars.
Great track!
Great greens for mid October. The course is challenging and is a good layout. For the price on this site, you can't call this a rich man's sport.
Can't decide if its my new favorite or my least favorite.
Narrow fairways and small greens make this difficult enough to make up for the lack of distance. Had to check in with a bartender at the bar which I found odd and she was less than friendly but I was here to golf not make friends. Not much scenery to look at other than corn fields and a cematary, no sand to speak of but the elevation changes on the course made up for that. The conditions were great however they had some dug up spots on a few holes that stopped at least one of my drives dead in its tracks. But I think there was 3 total people on the course and I was able to enjoy the day. I paid $15 and so for that rate I will say it was worth the money
Nice Classic Golf Course
This traditional layout has all the features of a golf course celebrating its 100th anniversary-- mature trees, hidden creeks winding throughout, and small greens. Since it is not overly long for the most part, the wrong club off the tee can put you out of position, and cost you par (or bogey). A low score can be had with solid iron play and decent putting, though. I would have liked to have walked the course, but I had driven 500 miles from Ohio to meet my brother at the course, and was a little fatigued. He walked. Excellent value in a relaxed rural setting.
Traditional layout with smallish greens
The fairways are in good condition. There is very little sand and the greens are relativly easy. Water comes into play on a few holes. Not a great test but it was fun to play with plenty of birdie opportunities, none of which we converted.
The course was alot of fun.
The course was in good shape. The 1st hole is awesome. The only thing I see needing attention is the tee boxes, they are very uneven. All in all, the course plays well.
Great in the country
This golf course was a very big surprise. The greens were fast and true with very little ball marks. Some of the holes were gentle doglegs which I thought was different. All different terrain changes, uphill, downhill, and the holes that are blind shots have a target in the air to aim at. The greens are small but very quick. Only one or two bunkers on the whole course. Short game better be good.
i love this course!
This course is called "the goat ranch." The name scared me away at first, but after playing it, It is not a flat farm/cornfield course like I assumed. I loved it! I try to play this course when I find a round around noon for $9. When I need to play early, I have no problem paying the full $29 for 18 w/ cart. The course is worth it. There is no sand traps though. I've tried courses in the area, or Kankakee. Its not as tough as Kankakee Elks, but its in much better condition, which I prefer courses that are well manicured, considering I grew up playing butler national, the best course ever!. The first hole at dwight has an elevated tee box which enables me to cut the dogleg, and drive the green. I love starting the round off with a birdie. The course does have a few easy, dead straight, or wide open holes, but counters that with a few really difficult greens that I always mess up on, which are holes 3, 4, 10, 11, & 14. The 17th green is an awkward. A completely flat green, but super narrow which I have difficultly chipping onto if I drive the ball to either side of the green. I can drive the green on a few par fours, which make the course much easier for me, which are holes 1, 12, and 17. The course has a $9-13 tee time almost everyday around noon. This is probably the best deal I've ever purchased on golf now. If you live close enough, this is a must play. My last round was at 7 am last Wednesday, I shot an 81 even though I double bogeyed holes 3,4, and 5, in 2 hours and 30 mins. Never thought I would be done by 9:30 am. The course gets slow at times because of all the old timers, but some people let me play through, but the layout of the course enables you to jump holes and come back to those holes if its slow. I feel like no one knows this is a good course besides for the locals.
Short but fun. Tricky short par fours but a very fun layout.
Very entertaining hole layouts with limited but some trouble. Smallish greens that roll at a better quality than the rest of the course. Very true and fast for a average community course.
A very challevging course.
The course has many hills and valleys and was very nice. The greens are in good shape and fast. All in all we had a great time and hope to play it again soon.
