Links style course
Nice links style course. Course was in good condition. Greens were relatively fast. Pace of play very slow.
Nice Links
Pros:
Course was in nice shape-
Greens hold really well-
I was allowed to walk/carry-
Decent pace, even on a busy day-
Cons:
Not enough yardage/distance markers in fairways-
Tee boxes from tips look beautiful, but are too spongy. Bring X-long tees and stable/grippy shoes -
Greens had nice pace, but traffic caused a very bumpy roll that wouldn't stay on line...mainly on downhill puts-
What happened GCI?
For years I kept Golf Club of Illinois high on my list of go to courses. It is usually kept in fine shape with nice amenities and staff. I was rather stunned to experience the substantial drop off in all of the above when I went on 7/2/15. First off, for a course which sits at a higher elevation than surrounding areas, the drainage I have known seemed non-existent. I realize we have had more than our fair amount of rain recently, however having gone more than 72 hrs without a drop should have yielded a fairer field of play. Green conditions were the worst I have ever seen here. Very spotty and beat up. You could not get a decent roll on your ball and speeds were inconsistent. The on course restroom facilities had no electric power or windows, so if you chose to use it, you would have to leave the bathroom door open for any semblance of light. This is unacceptable. Furthering that subject, when I visited the restroom at the turn, those rooms were closed and the attendant at the restaurant/bar seemed put out when I asked for the closest bathroom. What went wrong GCI? I can't seem to figure out why such a swift decline with no warning. One last this to point out is that the signage around holes 13 thru 16, while understood by regulars of the course, needs a major upgrade. I had two different groups around me make mistakes regarding holes 14 and 16. Please get with it GCI or you will continue to see a drop off in revenue which may likely lead to a better use of that land. Too bad. You used to be good.
Made a bad choice
I hadn't played Golf Club of Illinois in a couple of years, but remembered it being nicer than how it was yesterday. Very disappointed by the condition of the greens; they basically look chewed up and are in need of some major maintenance work. We had a couple of old fellas walking in front of us who ended up causing my group and the guys behind us to skip holes to get ahead of these guys. Normally, these old guys would let others play through or there would be a RANGER around to take care of things, but there was no Rangers and the oldsters were not yielding. Nor was there a beverage cart. This on a nice afternoon in July. My guess is that this place is going downhill and makes its money from banquets, etc. Too many nice golf courses around... I won't make this mistake again.
Limit the use of spikes
There were many spike marks on the greens so a more careful inspection of the types of shoes would help limit the wear and tear on the greens.
fast greens
Overall conditions of the course are nice. Narrow fairways and the greens are like putting on marble.
GCI
Course is in good shape
Little wet after a heavy rain the day prior
Played thru a few groups as a single but last foursome was intent on being in front of me
Good course overall; links style which is cool
Would definitely recommend to play 2-3 a year
Solid course
The course is solid and we'll kept. A couple of odd items like weird pin placements, and beverage cart on only8 and 17. The slow play ahead due to multiple twosomes being sent off caused for a slow round. Overall the course we well keptt and had provided opportunities for good shot making. I would play again to see if the odd items we an anomaly.
Yes, Great, phonominal course.
This course is the best that i have ever played as a junior. It is very fun. The fairways and greens are in superb condition. Hole 11 is amazing at a 678 par 5. Challenging, yet fun. Great par 3's, and they are very friendly people.
GCI Rocks
Nice course and friendly people. Its always challenging because its long. If you like links style courses, you'll love GCI.
Good shape for early in the season
We played the course on masters Sunday it was quite windy the greens were quick, fairways were in pretty good shape after having recently rained, they still are in the process of adding sand to the bunkers they are a little thin right now but overall a very enjoyable day.
The greens... fast, subtle, challenging
The course was in excellent condition and played a little easier than this summer, mainly because of dry, fast conditions and cut-down fescue. The greens are fast and challenging which requires leaving your approach below the hole for an easier putt. The course is plenty long from the blue tees and requires accurate shot-making and course knowledge. I think the slope rating at 130 is understated...plays like 134-136. Weekend play in the summer could be a little slow and cross over of balls occur on several holes because of proximity to each other...
Wide open cousre
Nice public course. Greens in great condition for this time of year, tee boxes were a little uneven but managable. Regular price a little steep compared to other courses in the area.
Good as usual...but.....
Course was fantastic as usual, it was wet in some fairway spots and some traps were either filled with water or had very hard sand. Luckily I only hit one of them. Biggest complaint was upon arrival at 7:10 for a 7:30 tee time, the opening staff member was late and we didn't tee off until 7:50, without a discount offered or anything. I should have demanded it but didn't. Hopefully next time they don't sleep in.
Great place to play
GCI is a great course. it was in great shape; a fair test and a challenge for all skill levels. love this course!!
Oldie but still a goodie!!
GCI, Ohhh how I love you & your distance! Challengingly long, good balance of scenery, greens firm but always fair. One of the original prairie style courses with many overlapping & forgiving fairways to make up for the cross breezes. If you consider yourself a value golfer & you enjoy grip it & rip it golf then you will certainly enjoy this beast. PS, enjoy 11, dubbed the longest par 5 in Illinois.
A poor value
No course should have fairway grass so long that it is difficult to find your ball when hit in the fairway. I've played many courses of this style and this was by far the worst. For the price they charge this course should be manicured. It is no wonder that it was poorly attended on a weekend where it was difficult to get tee times elsewhere.
One of my favorite local courses
I love the challenge of this course, the set-up, and it's usually in great shape.
What a Deal!!
GCI is one of the best deal's on golfnow.com
I travel 45 minutes and this is worth every minute.
Staff is great, greens are tough, and it's always windy.
What a gem!!
Pretty Tough LInks-style course
I don't play links style courses very often. This course has very few trees or water hazards. BUT - what it does have are large mounds covered in HIGH fescue. If your ball goes there - - it's GONE. The only way to find it is to step on it. I felt lucky to only lose 3 balls. Greens had been aerated 1 week or 2 ago but they were not unplayable.
