Destination: Chicago
And don't let its big-city reputation fool you. Chicago is even perfect for the nature lover. With 29 miles of lakefront paths, Chicago is one of the world's most walkable and beautiful cities. Here are some more numbers: 15 miles of bathing beaches, 36 annual parades, 19 miles of lakefront bicycle paths and 552 parks. Or ditch the hiking boots for skates: In the winter, popular tourist hub Millennium Park -- home to music, art, architecture and the mammoth, stainless-steel Cloud Gate sculpture -- offers ice skating to rival New York's famed Rockefeller Center.
Golfers will have a blast in Chicago, with its abundance and diversity of public golf courses. Cantigny Golf Course in nearby Wheaton offers 27 holes, including the signature ninth hole at the Lakeside course, which features a bunker in the shape of Dick Tracy. Also, don't miss: Orchard Valley in Aurora (former home to the Illinois Open), Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein, former Senior Tour host Kemper Lakes Golf Club and the famed Cog Hill Golf Club, home to No. 4, nicknamed "Dubsdread."
Foodies will have a field day choosing between the 7,300 restaurants in Chicago, including some of the best in the world (the city boasts more AAA five-diamond restaurants than any other in the nation). Food fans will certainly recognize the names of local chefs, such as Charlie Trotter, Grant Achatz and Rick Bayless. Or ditch the silk tablecloths for a real Midwest tradition: Chicago-style pizza at the original Pizzeria Uno and Chicago-style hot dogs at Gold Coast Dogs. Art lovers won't want to leave. It's fitting that the city that is the birthplace of the famed Second City -- where comics such as Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, John Belushi and John Candy got their start -- would support more than 200 theaters and nearly 200 art galleries. With a climate that boasts warm summers and comfortable springs and falls, Chicago is not to be missed.

Cantigny Golf is one of the premier courses in the Chicago area, but golfers have an awful time pronouncing its name. But playing the course is nothing like trying to pronounce it. Sure, the course is challenging, but the beauty of this 27-hole layout can easily erase any unease one might have with correctly articulating its name. The trio of nine-hole courses is nestled into a 500-acre park, teaming with gardens, old-growth trees and several lakes. Cantigny Golf is not just a golf course; it's a nature retreat.

There was a time when municipal golf courses rarely lived up to their own publicity. Over the years, that has changed. And there may be no better example of this transformation than Schaumburg Golf Club just northwest of Chicago. The price is reasonable, the atmosphere is welcoming and the golf is fair yet challenging, Dave Berner writes.
... full article »A great clubhouse and good golf await at Bowes Creek Country Club near Chicago
The clubhouse at Bowes Creek Country Club in Elgin is similar to the grand one at Royal Troon: a stately yet elegantly unassuming building that immediately says golf, good golf, pure golf. The greater Chicago area has a lot of splendid options. But when considering an experience that's above the typical municipal course and just below the ultra-expensive, Bowes is a great pick. Play the course, bring a camera, hang out in the clubhouse, and pretend for a moment you're spending some time at Scotland's Royal Troon.

Now, University of Chicago assistant professor Dr. Sian Beilock offers a theory as to why "pressure-induced failure" occurs. And according to Beilock, it's not because of the gallery, so lay off 'em Monty!

To name your new golf club "St. Andrews" takes a great deal of kahunas. Anything associated with the game's foundation immediately demands greatness. But for a club to survive almost 90 years of tumultuous Chicago history, it must be doing something right.
... full article »The early bird's best bets for early-season golf in Chicago
Many courses in the spring are itching to open. Some of the higher-end tracks wait it out, knowing the weather can be temperamental, but others open anticipating hungry early-spring players starved for a game. But you have to be cautious about what courses are best for these early rounds. Some facilities simply open too early with grounds that just aren't ready for regular play - not enough time to dry out from the thaw, fairway grass that's still dormant or root-less and greens that are long and bumpy. Here's the best places to play early this season.
