Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Illinois is not flashy, but it is enjoyable and playable for every level of golfer. And with rates from $16 on weekdays to just $20 on weekends ($12 extra for a cart), it is a solid value. This is the epitome of a neighborhood golf course, accessible and affordable to all. If golf like this were the norm everywhere, the game would be gaining players each year rather than losing them.

Bloomington, Ill. was pretty darn clever to bring in Arnold Palmer to put the city on the map as a golf destination. After playing The Den at Fox Creek, you'll never think of the word "muni" in quite the same way again. It offers more shot-for-shot value than most non-muni daily-fee courses you'll find at two or three times the money.

Describing Highland Park Golf Course in Bloomington as "tree-lined" is like calling Tiger Woods "good." Even the fairways of the short par 4s - of which there are eight - feel claustrophobic.

Even though the course is relatively short by today's standards, Provost cannot be accused of hyperbole.

Illinois' Bloomington/Normal Metro is a great golf destination. There are lots of fine golf courses there. The Den just isn't one of them. Scruffy fairways, unfriendly clubhouse, mislabeled yardages, absence of sensible aiming points and greens that don't drain very well are just a few of the things that make the place a prison sentence to play, says one disgruntled reader.
