Golfers often don't get what they pay for in Chicago, says reader

TPC at Deere Run

All those courses in this story hold themselves in such high regard that they've forgotten that there's more to that price tag than golf. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club and Seven Bridges Golf Club have completely lost customer focus with their snobbish attitude and take-it-or-leave-it form of customer service.

Seven Bridges Golf Club (No range, caters to outings), Ruffled Feathers Golf Club (Range sometimes open, but not early in the day. They misrepresent what good course conditions constitute. Sand covered greens and tees, aeration does not warrant $125). Cog Hill's Dubsdread, course conditions are great right before the Open but are not a premium course for most of the year. Add to that the most cranky, old pro shop attendant I've ever met and rangers that cater to their "comped" weathermen & sportscasters. The Glen Club is where the word rude was invented. There's a complete lack of customer focus apparent across the staff. You can also add Prairie Landing Golf Club to the group of overpriced.

Cantigny Golf Club is probably the best overall experience in Chicagoland (although the Pro shop items are overpriced) or drive to The TPC at Deere Run.

    John,
Saw your Letter to the Editor about courses around town that are overpriced and completely void of service. I can't agree more. (See a story I did about a year ago about this same subject)
I also would agree with you about Cantigny. It's a wonderful experience, and some course tweaking is on the way, some already done, in prep for some upcoming USGA tournaments. As for the pro shop - that's par for the course at any high-end facility - jack up the price for those who will pay it.
However, there are some wonderful Chicago places to play that have great prices and good service. Try Mistwood in Romeoville, Phillips Park in Aurora, and Orchard Valley in Aurora, to name a few.
The bad and overpriced ones stick in your mind, but most of Chicago's many courses have a pretty good mix of affordability and service.
    Enjoy your next game.
