Golf resorts in downstate Illinois are few and far between. Despite a wealth of superb, affordable public courses and the recently organized Southern Illinois Golf Trail, there's not much by way of family resort destinations that feature golf in their list of activities. Golfers who've visited Gambit Golf Club more than once over the past decade likely found one of two courses: a scenic, rolling, enjoyable challenge or a poorly conditioned pasture with a surly staff. The first decade for Kokopelli Golf Club has been one of soaring highs and sinking lows. Literally. The unique topography, along with the climate and soil type engendered problems early on. There were also man-made faults in the course construction, which worsened over time. Now, under new ownership that includes architect Steve Smyers, Kokopelli's finally reaching its full potential as a true destination course. [...] more »

Designed by Raymond Floyd, the public Red Tail Run Golf Club in Decatur, Illinois is an immensely fun municipal golf course to play, with a good variety of both strategic and penal holes, and enough options from tee to green to cater to players of any level. Best of all, the green fees remain more "municipal" than "signature." [...] more »

There are few PGA Tour tournament venues that are accessible to even below-average golfers of below-average means. The TPC at Deere Run, site of the John Deere Classic, just happens to be one of these rare golf courses. [...] more »

One of the two absolute "must plays" on the Southern Illinois Golf Trail is Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center in Carbondale. This excellent 6,863-yard municipal course not only offers a solid challenge to power-hitters and shot-makers alike, it is home to an admirable kids' program as well as the Southern Illinois University Women's Golf Team.
