Great Course

Front nine is a bit longer than the back and more open. There are some terrific holes on this course. The back nine is sporty, but fun and you could score here. No alcohol wild on the premises so it’s full of sober golfers. He will play . in well under four hours. Courses in great condition but the bunkers could use a little more sand. Greens are large fairways and excellent condition. Staff friendly and helpful. There’s a short driving range where you can shag your own balls and a nice putting green near the clubhouse. Definitely my favorite course these days.

Stonehenge hidden private gem

I was offered a chance to come down and play with a buddy at Stonehenge, and im glad I did. What neat track that is all about golf. Putting green his HUGE and range is bring your own shags but in good shape.

#1 loved it any hole that is open on the start with a huge green to ease you into a round is a must in my opinion. From their the rest of the front keeps getting better and better. #7 is a great par over water with bunkers all over and a false front. #8 is a dog leg right around the pond with a small waste area behind it. Pick your line be risky and have a short iron in but bring trouble in. #9 is a bombs away par 5 big birdie chance. Front nine is more open but is a good 300 yds longer.

Back nine is tighter but with a little more character. #12 is a awesome par 3 framed with trees behind, just a great hole. My favorite hole was #16 short par 4 but have to hit it through a chute with trouble all over. Get it through and big birdie chance. #18 not a fan of par 5 that has inland outbounds on onside and creek along the left with huge willow trees to navigate around. A very very straight tee ball over the bunkers is your only chance.

Stonehenge was a nice change of pace track. Its not your high end Chicago land course or private club but if you want a nice relaxing round, this is a place to try.

Stonehenge GC - Nice, Unheralded Private Club in NW Chicago Burbs!

The Good: Stonehenge is a relatively unknown, unheralded private club in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. A modest course that is all about golf, nothing less and nothing more, it showcases a strong Charles Maddox design that is mostly flat but has huge, undulating greens. The front nine is fairly open and benign, while the closing nine is much tighter and has some excellent views with mature tree framing. One of the better quartets of Par 3’s that I’ve played in the greater Chicago area, particularly the beautiful mid-length #12. Some fun dogleg Par 4’s and the closing double dogleg Par-5 18th is quite the finish! Good course conditions and nice, unassuming clubhouse. Large putting green that gives a good sense of what’s to come on the large greens. At just $39 to walk during prime weekends, one of the better values in the entire Chicago suburbs. Superb pace of play.

The Bad: Limited practice area with no formal driving range other than a 150-yard area to shag your own balls. The greens were only in fair condition and putt a little slow for my liking. While its not overly important to some, the course is dry and doesn’t provide or allow any alcoholic beverages on the premises. No on-course service and no GPS on carts.

The Verdict: Stonehenge is a nice surprise of a golf course and a great option for the price if you can find your way on. Interesting course that has enough open areas for the weekend hacker but enough challenge, especially the green complexes, to interest the low handicapper.

Best Hole: The Par-3 12th is one of the prettiest Par-3’s in the area. Nice tree amphitheater in the background that frames the hole. Worth the price of admission for sure!

Great experience

Stonehenge is a golfer's dream. The course (in Lake Barrington, not Barrington) is fun, challenging, and leaves you wanting to come back. The staff are all wonderful nice people, eager to help in any way. The course is highly maintained. I've been to other courses where the photos barely look like the same course, not the case at Stonehenge. Don't be surprised if you see (4-legged) wildlife on the course, just another neat part of playing Stonehenge. No alcohol at the clubhouse, be aware of that if it's a priority to you. If you're looking for a great golf experience at a clean, well-groomed course ran by good people, and great value for your money, then you'll like Stonehenge. I give them a 5 golf ball rating. Hit 'em straight......

Classic, challenging and worth the trip & cost to play

This course is a no nonsense, alcohol-free, private club, that is all about the game of golf. Built in 1972, but it feels like it could have been built in 1922, the course was designed by Charles Maddox on a great piece of parkland property in North Barrington horse country. The many trees, wildlife and utter tranquility of the secluded location is the perfect setting for the game. There is some water and enough strategic challenge to keep you engaged with the course at all times. Putting well, demands the right approach shot to the many large and sloped greens. You need a good game and solid course management to score well. A par 72 with a championship slope of 135, it's 6848 from the tips. Choosing the right tee box will serve you well.

We played all 18 in 3.5 hours, no one pushing us nor did we push the group ahead. In carts or walking, the members move. Conditions, this early in the season were fantastic.

There is a small (irons only) practice area. The staff and crew could not be a more helpful and welcoming group. It's a private club with simple services and food, but excellent value no matter the purchase.

I found this experience to be one of the best I've had in the Chicago area. Well worth the one hour + trip from the city to Barrington.
